Tata Motors today unveiled the Tata Nexon EV in Mumbai calling it “an aspirational SUV for personal car buyers looking for a thrilling, connected drive experience with zero emissions.”
Fancy literature aside, here are 10 things that you may not know about the Tata Nexon electric:
INR 15-17 lakh ex-showroom price
Tata Motors has confirmed twice now that Nexon will be a pricey SUV with estimated final amount in the INR 15-17 lakh range before taxes and registration. The top-end Nexon petrol is priced at INR 9.6 lakh (ex-showroom) and justifying the premium for the zero-emissions version is going to prove tricky.
3 variants and 3 colour options
The Nexon EV is launching in 3 colour variants – XZ+ LUX, XZ+ (both in 2 tone) and XM (in single tone) and in 3 colours – Signature Teal Blue colour, Moonlit Silver and Glacier White.
129 PS electric ‘engine’
The Nexon electric car is equipped with a 129 PS/245 Nm permanent-magnet AC motor powered by a 30.2 kWh liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery, enabling India’s first production electric SUV to accelerate from 0 to 60 kmph in 4.6 seconds and 0 to 100 kmph in 9.9 seconds. Tata claims it comes with a “best-in-industry dust and water proof battery pack” that meets IP67 standards and has an impact resistant battery casing. The battery is also charged through regenerative braking.
300 km range & 9-hour household outlet charging time
The Nexon EV has a driving range of over 300 km on a single charge under the Modified Indian Driving Cycle (MIDC). When plugged into a Fast DC Charger, 80% battery capacity will be replenished within 60 minutes. For a full charge on a 15 amps household outlet that runs kettles and microwave ovens, it would take 8-9 hours.
ZConnect App helps locate charging stations & service outlets
The Nexon EV comes with 35 Mobile App based connected features, ranging from remote commands, vehicle tracking, driving behavior analytics, navigation and remote diagnostics. The ZConnect smartphone App helps owners to locate nearby charging points, TML service stations, set-up speed alerts, track vehicle location and many other features.
Better driving experience than a regular Nexon
Tata Motors says since the battery pack is placed underneath the vehicle body, it has a lower center of gravity than the petrol or diesel version. In the company’s words, the SUV has a “center of gravity more akin to that of a sedan or a hatchback, ensuring maximum stability and excellent dynamic performance on winding roads.”
The vehicle can be driven in two modes – Drive & Sport, and furthermore has Hill Ascent & Descent Assist, and Smart Regen with Creep feature allows user to drive through city traffic without fatigue.
8-year warranty on the battery & motor
The Tata Nexon Electric has a warranty of 8 years or 1,60,000 km (whichever comes first) on battery & motor.
Bookings open tomorrow for INR 21,000
Pre-bookings for the Tata Nexon EV open tomorrow for an amount of Rs 21,000 either through company’s website or through select authorized dealers. The car will be launched next month.
Based on ‘India’s safest car’
In December 2018, the Tata Nexon became the first made-in-India and sold-in-India vehicle to achieve Global NCAP’s coveted five star crash test rating. The compact SUV scored five stars for Adult Occupant Protection and three stars for Child Occupant Protection. Tata Motors says the Nexon electric version retains all learnings from the GNCAP rating and is equipped with class-leading safety features.
Previews the design of the Tata Nexon facelift
The regular Tata Nexon was introduced in September 2017 and early next year will receive a facelift. The EV showcased today previews some of the changes awaiting the refresh such as the higher bonnet, slimmer grille that connects into the sharply cut headlamps, the digitalized instrument cluster and the new steering wheel.
