Update – Instagram user, Shingeun_pic, has spotted the Kia Niro new model on test in South Korea more or less confirming that the Habaniro concept’s experimental design features are going into the production vehicle. Through gaps in the prototype camouflage, notice the headlamp that is in a split design similar to the concept. The window lines and C-Pillar too make inferences to the concept. Kia designers have pushed several more elements like the boomerang-type taillights and the roofline drop into production. The Niro promises to be a stylish and spacious electrified Kia when it comes out in late-2021.
July 16, 2020 –
Spy shots posted on South Korean board clien.net allegedly give us the first look at the next-gen Kia Niro. The upcoming SUV appears ready to be tested in its production form now.
For those new to the Kia Niro, it’s a premium B-SUV (global classification) introduced in early-2016 that is roughly the size of the Kia Seltos. While the Kia Seltos sits on the Hyundai Creta’s platform, the Kia Niro is based on a platform engineered for electrified vehicles. In its first generation, it’s available in full-hybrid electric or strong hybrid electric, plug-in hybrid electric and pure electric variants.
The second-gen Kia Niro, codenamed ‘Kia SG2’, or ‘기아 SG2’ in Korean, is scheduled for its market launch internationally starting next year. Spy shots show the next-gen SUV featuring a brand-new front end with split headlamps and a more aggressive grille pattern for a striking appearance. The design of the front-end suggests that the 2021 Kia Niro will have cues borrowed from the Kia HabaNiro all-electric SUV concept presented last year. The silhouette of the second-gen model is quite familiar.
To retain the popularity of the Kia Niro in markets across the globe with different electrification incentives and customer demand, Hyundai Motor Group may once again offer it in full-hybrid, plug-in hybrid and pure electric variants. The wide variant spread would ensure that there is enough demand for the Kia Seltos alternative in the South Korean automaker’s portfolio. While there will be a Kia Seltos EV coming out this year, it is reserved for China and the potential for the Kia Niro EV will be preserved in its existing markets.
Will HMG launch the Kia Niro in India?
Kia Motors India showcased the e-Niro at the Auto Expo 2020.
With the Kia Seltos selling like hotcakes in India, we think Hyundai Motor Group would focus only on that model and platform instead of rolling out another similar SUV. The Kia Niro is a more sophisticated product anyways, and it’s going to be even more so in its second generation, meaning it won’t be any less expensive.
HMG has no plan to launch a hybrid model here at the moment, given that the government plans to push automakers to leapfrog to pure electric vehicles and the incentives will continue directed that way. As for a similar-sized all-electric SUV, a Kia Seltos EV would make more sense for India than a Kia Niro EV. That’s a talk for the distant future, though.
