According to a report by Autocar Professional, Mahindra Two Wheelers is gearing up to unveil its electric scooter before the Auto Expo 2020, which opens on 5th February 2020 for the media. The company is said to be in the final stages of introducing the e-scooter, believed to have already completed the ARAI certification process. The expected price of the Mahindra e-scooter will be around Rs.80,000 ex-showroom after FAME 2 and state government subsidies.
The Mahindra electric scooter is reportedly powered by a 3 kW motor and is expected have a range of 80 km to a charge. It is said to have a top speed of around 60 km/h. The Bajaj Chetak in comparison comes with a more powerful 4 kW motor, a superior range of 95 km (in Eco mode) and a similar top speed of about 60 km/h. The difference is that the metal-bodied Bajaj Chetak will cost considerably more, with the price expected at about Rs.1.1 lakh ex-showroom.
The move to quickly introduce electric two-wheelers was on expected lines, as the brand already owns two electric scooter companies – Mahindra Genze in USA and Peugeot Motocycles in France. Mahindra Two Wheelers has already started manufacturing/assembling electric two-wheelers for the Peugeot brand at its Pithampur manufacturing plant in Madhya Pradesh and shipped the first batch of made-in-India Peugeot E-Ludix e-scooters in September 2019. The plant has an annual production capacity of 750,000 units.
Earlier this year, the Mahindra GenZe electric scooter was spotted testing in India. The GenZe e-scooter is powered by a detachable 2kWh Lithium-ion battery that makes 2 PS of power and a sensational 100 Nm of torque. In a single charge, the e-scooter can return a range of 48 km, can be charged fully in 3.5 hours and has a top speed of 48 km/h. Other features include full-digital touchscreen instrument cluster, smartphone connectivity, in-built GPS, multi riding modes, remote tracking and locking. Expect some of the features of the E-Ludix and the GenZe on Mahindra’s scooter.
Mahindra Electric is also building its own EV powertrain plant in Chakan, Maharashtra, with an investment of around Rs.200 crore. The factory will be equipped to produce key components of an EV powertrain including battery, motor and electronics.
