Tata’s Jaguar could become an EV brand competing with Tesla

JLR is planning a complete overhaul for its Jaguar brand, as per a new report from autoexpress.co.uk. Thierry Bollore, who will join the company next month as its CEO, may spin-off Jaguar into an electric-only brand like Tesla and Polestar.

3 Jaguar electric cars in the pipeline

The report talks about a new compact electric sedan at the core of the Jaguar brand transformation plan, indicating a British Tesla Model 3 rival. The Tesla Model 3 is outselling the Jaguar XE and Jaguar XF combined, and there’s no doubt that this has caught the attention of the JLR boardroom

Jaguar I-Pace charging
Jaguar I-Pace sales climbed 40% last fiscal. The Jaguar XE, relaunched as an electric car with a more affordable price could become the best-selling Jaguar in Europe and USA.

This model would compete with even the newcomer Polestar 2. It is worth noting here that the flagship model Jaguar XJ is already going electric-only in the next generation, and that alone is a strong signal for the remaining range switching to electric in their next generation. Citing insiders, the British website says that the compact Jaguar electric sedan will likely make use of the Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA).

The Jaguar I-Pace is progressing well in most markets as sales shot up 40% in FY2020. This model will gain a big brother with the name Jaguar J-Pace using the bones of the Road Rover Electric SUV. However the Jaguar XE isn’t selling well and the way JLR sees luring Audi A4, BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class customers is probably converting it into a smaller yet as spacious all-electric compact car, a model that it can market as a worthy rival to the Tesla Model 3 and Polestar 2.

If this plan is approved, Jaguar would have at least four EVs in its ranks in the near future – the entry-level Jaguar discussed here, the Jaguar I-Pace, the Jaguar J-Pace and the new Jaguar XJ.
