The all-electric Hyundai Kona has set a Guinness World Record for the highest altitude achieved in an electric car. The Kona was driven to an altitude of 5,731 meters to Sawula Pass in Tibet, breaking the previous record of 5,715.28 meters altitude by the Chinese car Nio ES8 in September 2018.

Hyundai says that for the entire drive duration the Kona was charged through portable chargers overnight and it experienced no performance issues while climbing the peaks. While descending from peaks, the power regeneration system complimented the car’s driving range.
The Hyundai Kona is powered by a 136 PS permanent-magnet synchronous electric motor, developing 40.27 kgm of torque. Powered by a 39.2 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery, Kona can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.7 seconds. With a segment-topping ARAI Certified range of 452 km/charge, Kona can be charged to 80% in 57 minutes with DC quick charger (zero to 80 % charge @ 50 kW), using the CCS Type II charging port, while a 7.2 kW Level-II charger takes 6 hours and 10 minutes. Hyundai is offering a warranty for 3 years/unlimited km for the car and 8 years/160,000 km for the battery and has delivered nearly 300 Konas to customers since the launch in July 2019.
Hyundai has big plans for EVs and has made India its regional headquarters to make smart electric vehicles for emerging markets. Hyundai is reportedly planning to invest around US $200 million to develop a new EV platform that will be the base of an affordable electric car priced under Rs 10 lakh in 2022.
