Honda India will prepare its own electric two-wheeler range: YS Guleria

Honda will consider developing a lineup of electric two-wheelers in India after it completes the planned feasibility study, as confirmed by Mr YS Guleria, Senior VP, Sales & Marketing, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India, in interaction with ETAuto.

Honda has the line-up of electric vehicles especially scooters. We currently don’t have any commercial plan in the near future. We are going to get one of the electric scooters to India for the basic purpose of doing a feasibility study. And based on the result of the study, we will be preparing our own bank of EV in India.

And whether the electric scooter would be in a price segment similar to where the competition (Bajaj, TVS and Ather) is or a different one, Mr Guleria said that India will be able to see what type of scooter it is once the company starts testing it in public.

Honda showcased the PCX electric scooter to some Indian dealers in January 2020 but Mr Minoru Kato, President, CEO and MD, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India has confirmed that it will not launch the PCX as its first electric vehicle. The company will be bringing one of its e-scooters from China, where it already has a wide range of products. The recently introduced Honda ‘V-GO’ looks good but has lesser probability of arriving in India because of its tiny seat but the ‘H12’ model is better suited to the overall Indian requirements. However nothing is for certain yet.

Honda is also concentrating on expanding its premium BigWing dealerships across India. Honda opened its first BigWing showroom in Gurugram in April 2019 and is planning to expand the number of showrooms to 75 cities. Honda will also be bringing the total number of products sold through the BigWing showrooms from the current seven models to thirteen models. The company recently launched the 2020 Honda Africa Twin adventure sports bike.

Currently, Honda has three CKD models and is also importing other CBUs like the Fireblade, the Gold Wing and the Forza 300 in the premium scooter category. The company is exploring some new mass production vehicles in the middleweight category.
