Hindustan Petroleum & EESL to set up charging stations across India

Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) has announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL) to build the charging infrastructure across India to boost shift towards electric mobility.

Both the companies will be involved in planning & installation of EV charging stations at locations such as retail outlets, depots, office premises and parking lots. These charging stations would be equipped to handle two-, three- and four-wheeled electric vehicles.

EESL Managing Director Saurabh Kumar said:

Increased access to charging infrastructure is vital for the uptake of electric mobility across the entire EV ecosystem of two, three, and four-wheelers. Our partnership with HPCL will also establish more visibility of charging infrastructure, sending a signal to the general public that India’s electric mobility vision is being realised in full potential.

In a statement, Hindustan Petroleum said:

With the installation of public charging stations, the range anxiety of EV owners is expected to reduce, which will increase the adoption of electric mobility. This will also bring down automobile emissions, enabling a cleaner and greener environment, in turn, safeguarding the public from health risks.

The state-run EESL recently inaugurated its first EV charging station in South Delhi near the Greater Kailash market area. This is the first of 75 charging stations that will come up in partnership with South Delhi Municipal Corporation. EESL has partnered with several other companies to expand the EV charging network in cities. EESL has signed another MoU with Pune Municipal Corporation to set up 50 charging stations across Pune.

Another state-run organisation Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) is planning EV charging points across the Delhi-Chandigarh highway. Brands like MG Motor and Tata Motors have also planned to setup a charging network independently with Tata Motors planning to install 500 EV charging points by 2021.

MG Motor has already opened its first station at MG’s showroom at Gurugram with three more installed in South Delhi, West Delhi and Noida. The brand, in partnership with Finland-based Fortum, has installed six more public fast chargers at MG’s Dealer locations in Bengaluru, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad.
