Bajaj Auto’s Chetak electric scooter that competes with the TVS iQube and the Ather 450X is going national soon. According to a report from cnbctv18.com, the company plans to launch the Chetak electric scooter in 28 new cities.
Bajaj Auto launched the Chetak electric scooter in Bengaluru and Pune this year with the strategy to study how customers use the vehicle and the test the market with a premium offering, before taking the new concept pan India. Due to the COVID-19-related supply constraints, production came to a halt, and the company had to stop taking orders and hold back expansion plans. Now, though, it is considering to expand the Bajaj Chetak availability to 30 cities, as per the report.
Company officials have disclosed to the business publication that 600 Chetak electric scooter units have left the factory since deliveries began in March. Half of these were delivered in September alone. Rakesh Sharma, Director, Bajaj Auto, has confirmed that the company will gradually expand the Chetak availability to 30 cities.
Which are the new cities getting the Bajaj Chetak?
According to the CNBC TV18 report, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Vizag & Goa are next for the Bajaj Chetak electric scooter.
Sharma told the business publication that the company plans to begin the Chetak electric scooter availability expansion this quarter (October-December 2020). Like Ather Energy, it would expand its high-speed EV availability to large cities and mid-size towns first. The company has locations like Chennai, Delhi, Vizag, Hyderabad, Jaipur and Goa in sight for the Phase I expansion.
The Chetak electric scooter has received a positive response, and it is so impressive that a rival company has shipped it to its R&D facility in Japan. Bajaj Auto tracked down two units using their GPS at the competitor’s Japanese R&D facility, and that company could be Honda, Suzuki or Yamaha. By the end of 2022, the first Suzuki electric scooter and Yamaha electric scooter are to touch down in India.
