Ather 450X teased ahead of today’s launch

Bengaluru-based startup Ather Energy has sent out one last teaser of the 450X ahead of its launch today.

Talking to Startup Street of CNBC-TV18, Tarun Mehta, co-founder of Ather Energy, said that the 450X is a step-up from the 450 in every way. The company, partly owned by Hero Motocorp, has received feedback from “1000’s of customers and even more number of people in the online community” all of which has funneled into the development of its third variant.

Mehta said the 450X would have higher performance, smart features, utility, and almost on every single specification, the 450X becomes an upgrade to the 450. The company has gone back to the architecture – both the hardware and software, and the design is in a way that the scooter is relevant for a few years in the face of new launches from the company. Ather will launch the 450X in 6 cities – Bengaluru, Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad and Pune, with Ahmedabad, Cochin, Kolkata and Coimbatore to join in the next phase.

This is what Ather has to say about the 450X, its ‘super scooter’:

A leap beyond a regular scooter. A step above the Ather 450. Up on performance. Up on intelligence. Up on awe. The Ather 450X is everything you wanted your scooter to be. Except the center stand. Final product specifications and the price will be announced post the formal unveiling of Ather 450X in a few weeks.

Ather is not revealing any product details at this time but the hints dropped in the teaser confirm a few aspects. The Ather 450 is powered by a 5.4 kW BLDC motor wired to a 2.4 kWh Li-Ion battery pack giving it a maximum range of 75 km, a top speed of 80 kmph and a 0-40 kmph acceleration time of 3.9 seconds. The 450X should come with a bigger battery, a more powerful motor (or spec of the current motor) with a longer range (closer to the Bajaj Chetak’s claimed range of 95 km) and a quicker 0-40 kmph time.

Ather 450X 9 colours
Ather Energy has teased the 9 body colour options of the 450X on its Twitter page. The Ather 450 comes in just 1 colour – white.

Another area of the ‘X’ that will get changes is the styling – expect to see new body graphics and paint combinations, and by ‘Up on intelligence’ it promises to add features and perhaps improve the UX of the 7-inch interactive dashboard and Ather smartphone app. The company has already sent out 6 OTA updates since September 2018.

What is also set to change is the price of the X variant. The 450 is priced at 1.14 lakh (on-road Bengaluru) which should see an upward revision with the introduction of the new hardware. The company will open pre-orders shortly and has confirmed that it will enter the markets of Pune, Hyderabad, Delhi and Mumbai next.
