Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) showcased its unique hybrid energy storage system that is has developed in collaboration with Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on the Tata Ace platform at the Auto Expo 2020.
About the vehicle:
This is an early demonstrator vehicle, showing a whole different concept of hybrid energy storage device. The hybrid energy storage device is a combination of battery and super capacitor systems. The super capacitor is from ISRO. ISRO and ARAI have a long association. We have worked together on Lithium-Ion batteries, where we have validated their batteries for automotive applications and suggested the required changes. Their technology has been transferred to the industry already.
Now, we are working together on the battery and super capacitor technology for two reasons – to reduce the battery size or energy can be shared between the systems; as the battery size reduces, the weight of the super capacitor also becomes less. As the weight goes down, the efficiency goes up and cost also will feel the effect.
Can you tell us about the range?
It is almost similar to what we have earlier produced with our conventional batteries. Those battery-electric models which were giving 120 km of range. With this system, we can achieve the same range but here we are putting in a super capacitor of less size, which will produce 40 per cent of the total energy required by the vehicle. This will result in weight reduction, cost reduction and improve the life of the battery.
What is the top speed and power output?
We have kept the top speed around 60 km/h; the voltage is 72V at this moment and the power output will be around 15 kW (20.1 hp).
When was the vehicle developed?
The vehicle was developed earlier but we changed the power pack with the super capacitor in 2019. We have showcased the vehicle internally with ARAI personnel and this is the first time to display it in public.
