Digital artist, KDesign AG, has created a mockup of what the 2022 Ford Focus could look like, although prototypes spotted testing in Europe indicate Ford designers are planning soft updates to the bumpers, fenders and lights of the popular B-segment which is also available in a raised ‘Active’ variant with crossover styling elements.
In June last year, the Ford Focus range saw a significant update in the European market with the introduction of a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with Ford Hazard Warning, and more importantly the EcoBoost Hybrid electrified powertrain which features a belt-driven integrated starter generator and an air-cooled 48V lithium ion battery pack under the front passenger’s seat.
The EcoBoost Hybrid is exclusive to the 1.0-liter three-cylinder EcoBoost petrol engine but is available in two states of tune – 125 PS and 155 PS. The 125 PS variant emits 114 gm/km of CO2 whereas the 155 PS coughs out 2gm/km more (WLTP cycle); both are available with a 6-speed MT only.
With the introduction of the 2022 Ford Focus, the Blue Oval will be capitalizing on the hybrid tech to boost sales of the Focus which is lagging behind its key competitors, the VW Golf and Skoda Octavia, as per CarSalesBase.com. For the year ended 2020, Ford saw around 173,000 units of its Focus reach European homes whereas Volkswagen one-upped the American with 285,000 units of the Golf and 180,000 units of group company’s Skoda Octavia which shares its platform and parts with the Golf.
It is to be noted that while the ‘greenest’ Focus is available only as a MHEV, rival VW and Skoda offer the Golf and Octavia respectively with plug-in hybrid variants, and in their sporty GTE and vRS variants in addition to their plain-Jane variants. Ford however offers the performance Focus ST variants strictly without any electrification.
Though the 2022 Ford Focus is unlikely to see inclusion of a PHEV, the next-gen model which should arrive by the middle of this decade should address this shortcoming keeping inline with Ford’s announcement to make all its passenger vehicles in Europe zero emissions capable (electric or PHEV) by mid-2026, and moving to all electric by 2030.
