The fourth-gen Audi A8 turned four years old this month and is the oldest of the German limousine trio. A facelift is in the works for the luxury limo, and it’s coming to dealer showrooms later this year. Markus Duesmann, CEO, Audi, has suggested that the new A8 could debut at IAA 2021 (2021 Munich Motor Show) that will run from 6-12 September.
“In autumn, it (Audi A8) will undergo a model upgrade for the current generation,” Duesmann said during the Q&A session at the company’s annual press conference this year. German media has been reporting that customer deliveries of the A8 facelift in Europe would begin by the end of this year.
The 2022 Audi A8 (facelift) is undergoing road-testing in Europe at the moment. These images, which were sent to ElectricVehicleWeb by the reader who goes by the name audipics_de, show the modest external changes planned for the mid-cycle action. Audi will likely freshen the grille, bumpers, and lights to take this A8 generation to the end of its life.
New Audi A8 Horch
The 2022 A8 needs to reach showrooms quickly as its chief rival – the Mercedes S Class – has moved on to a high-tech, next-generation version (W223), and the luxury-oriented new Maybach S Class is available in European markets. Audi might be plotting a rival to the Maybach S Class itself with a flagship variant on the 2022 A8, called the Audi A8 ‘Horch.’ The Horch name signifies one of Audi’s predecessor car companies, founded by August Horch.
The A8 Horch will be the pinnacle of the range and is likely to offer the Bentley sourced W12 or, at the very least, a turbocharged V8. There will be no electrification here, at least not in its first generation.
In China, autohome.com.cn has posted spy shots of a new Audi A8 (L) with a sensing device above the rear door handles. This device could be for the digital key feature or passenger identification, as per the report. One of these pictures also reveals a new Singleframe grille with squarish inlets. The report says that this is the Horch Edition (or the Horch variant) that will rival the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class.
The A8 (L) Horch Edition carries unique bumpers and alloy wheels, and Audi may not offer its Singleframe grille design on other configurations. It could have exclusive comfort and convenience features for the rear-seat passengers.
New Audi A8 Hybrid
The regular variants of the 2022 A8 will continue to offer at least one, if not two, hybrid options. An all-electric A8 is ruled for the present D5 generation at least, though the D6 is likely to be announced with only electric and electrified variants. This is in line with Audi’s plan to convert other offerings like the A4 and A6 to pure electric cars by the end of this decade.
The current A8 60 TFSI eQuattro PHEV combines a 3.0-liter V6 with a 134 hp electric motor has an all-electric range of 29 miles (46 km). According to some reports, a larger battery to extend the pure EV range of the luxury sedan is in the offing, considering that Mercedes-Benz has raised the bar here to 100 km with S-Class PHEV. More details about the 2022 A8 hybrid could emerge in the coming weeks.
Next-gen Audi A8
It looks like Audi is still to freeze the powertrain strategy for the next-generation A8. Asked if there won’t be an A8 successor because it wasn’t on the list of ICE models which the company plans to continue, Duesmann said, “No, not as such. The A8 is an important model for us.” Further, Duesmann said, “For us, the first Artemis model will also be electric in the luxury car (segment), and when it comes to the A8 successor, we will inform you in due time.”
