2020 Hyundai i20 goes on sale internationally, gets mild-hybrid

The 2020 Hyundai i20 has been launched overseas and can be purchased as a mild-hybrid electric vehicle. Germany is the first country where Hyundai has launched the 2020 i20, pricing it from EUR 13,637.31 or INR 12.15 lakh (INR 12,15,112.03).

The third-gen Hyundai i20 is the first one to be offered with electrification. In Germany, it is available with 1.2-litre MPi naturally aspirated petrol and 1.0-litre T-GDi turbocharged petrol engines. A 48-volt mild-hybrid system can be applied on the latter, optionally. Hyundai says that this system reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 3-4%.

The 2020 Hyundai i20 in Europe is available with an Intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT), which decouples the engine from the transmission when the driver takes his/her foot off the accelerator pedal and allows the car to coast.

When possible, the 48-volt mild hybrid system decouples the engine from the transmission and switches to a ‘sailing’ or coasting mode to save fuel as soon as the driver releases the accelerator. The generator of this system recuperates kinetic energy during deceleration and stores it in a secondary, 48-volt battery. Prices of the mild-hybrid configurations start at EUR 18,023.87 or INR 16.06 lakh (16,05,963.44).

The 2020 Hyundai i20 in India is unlikely have a 48-volt mild-hybrid system.

The 2020 Hyundai i20 launch in India is said to take place in September. The third-gen model is unlikely to arrive in our market with the aforementioned 48-volt mild-hybrid system. However, the partial electrification technology is set to be activated in India around the time when the new CAFE norms are implemented (2022) or the RDE test procedure becomes effective (2023).
